Zakat al-Fitr will be distributed to registered recipients in Male’ City starting Sunday, the Islamic Affairs Ministry says.
The Ministry said the funds will be distributed from its offices on Sunday and Monday starting 1030AM. In the event the recipient is unable to collect the money, they can send another with the recipient’s national ID card, the Ministry said.
In the atolls, Zakat will be distributed through local councils. According to the Ministry, 5900 people are registered as poor this year. The Ministry collected over MVR2 million as Zakat al-Fitr by June 23.
The Ministry has set 2.4 kg of rice as the amount of Nisab or the minimum amount for Zakat al-Fitr, and said Zakat collection will continue till the 28th of Ramadan. For the Male’ region, the amount of Zakat to be paid by an individual is MV12 for normal Rice, MVR65 for Thailand Rice and MVR77 for Basmati Rice. The Ministry said the amounts will vary depending on the price of rice in each island.
