President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday pointed out that tobacco remains the leading cause of cancer in the Maldives as he urged the Maldivian people to avoid the habit.
In a message on social media platforms on the occasion of World Cancer Day, President Dr Muizzu urged his people to resolve to quit the habit this year.
The President later in an official message, said the world remains united under the powerful theme "United by Unique", highlighting the individuality of each person's cancer journey while emphasising their collective strength.
According to President Dr Muizzu, the Maldives is on track to achieving the global and regional goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health concern by 2030.
“Additionally, the Government is actively working on establishing a specialised cancer facility and expanding palliative care services across the country to ensure accessibility to comprehensive care,” he explained.
President Dr Muizzu said that currently, through Primary Health Care, both at island and Atoll levels, screening is available for five common cancers while efforts are also underway to establish specialised screening facilities, which will further support the implementation of these programmes, that will also be expanded to the urban healthcare facilities.
In efforts to combat possible cancer contributors, the recent ban on electronic cigarettes and the strengthening of tobacco control legislation and policies, including free cessation services demonstrates our unwavering dedication to safeguard the Maldivian people from potential cancer risk factors, he added.
“On this day, I honour the memory of the loved ones we have lost to this cause, as well as applaud the spirit and resilience of those that are fighting this difficult journey every day,” the President said.
“I also express my sincere gratitude to healthcare professionals, NGOs, international partners, advocates, and our community as a whole, who tirelessly work to make a difference.”
President Dr Muizzu insisted that together, through collective action and shared responsibility, Maldives is building a future where prevention, early detection, and equitable access to care defines success.
“I reaffirm the commitment of the Government in working together to fight cancer and to create a healthier, resilient, and a happier nation.”
