12 Killed, 18 Missing in Flash Floods in India

Twelve people died and 18 others went missing after a cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides in India's northern Uttarakhand state, officials said on Saturday.

Officials said at least 200 families were affected after heavy rains lashed Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts of the state on Friday. While nine people died in Pithoragarh, three others lost their lives in Chamoli.

Rescue and relief operation is underway in both the districts as many people are believed to be trapped under debris.

State chief, Harish Rawat on Friday announced compensation of INR 200,000 Rupees or about 2,968 Dollars for the kin of the deceased.

The met department had issued a warning for incessant rainfall in many areas and had asked people to take precautions.

Uttarakhand suffered heavy losses after flash floods due to cloudburst in June 2013 left over 5,000 dead or missing. Security forces evacuated at least 100,000 people as the disaster ravaged many villages, roads and bridges in the hilly state.
