The Maldives' key economic sectors, specifically tourism and fisheries, have shown substantial progress throughout January, according to recently released statistics. The Ministry of Tourism and Environment reported an 8% increase in tourist arrivals to the Maldives this January compared to the same period in 2024. The Maldives welcomed 207,798 tourists in January 2025, an increase from 192,385 tourists recorded in January 2024, data showed.
The Maldives recorded its highest single-day tourist arrivals for January on the 31st, with 9,495 visitors. In January 2025, the top three tourism source markets were China, Russia, and Italy. The Maldives welcomed 36,169 Chinese tourists, 22,124 Russian tourists, and 20,686 Italian tourists during this period, data revealed.
Simultaneously, in the fisheries sector, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) announced a substantial increase in payments to fishermen for January 2025. The quantity of fish sold to MIFCO also saw significant growth during this period.
In December 2024, MIFCO reported disbursing approximately USD 4.38 million to fishermen for their catch. This payment increased to over USD 6.44 million in January 2025, reflecting a 47% rise compared to the previous month. Payments were made to 1,750 fishing vessels for their fish sold to MIFCO, the company revealed.
In alignment with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's electoral pledge, MIFCO is now committed to settling all payments within 48 hours of purchasing fish. This policy was inaugurated on Fishermen’s Day 2024, observed on 10 December. Since then, MIFCO has consistently adhered to this 48-hour payment policy.
