President Pledges to Preserve Heritage and Revive National Identity

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting and preserving the Maldivian heritage in such a way that its authenticity and natural beauty is not compromised. The President made the remark during his ongoing visit to select islands of Haa Alif Atoll.

During his visit, the President spoke extensively on the government's direction in preserving Maldivian nationality and heritage, and outlined plans to revitalise national identity through dedicated efforts in Utheemu, Baarah, and Thakandhoo.

Speaking to the residents of Utheemu as part of his visit, President Muizzu emphasised that a nationalist ideology can only be developed when the people are deeply aware of their identities. He noted that the targeted efforts in individual islands is a national service for the benefit of the entire country and people.

In Utheemu, President Muizzu announced that the National Day will be vibrantly marked in the island for two consecutive years. The event will feature a series of programmes to honour Maldivian heritage. He also announced a major initiative to restore and maintain ancient monuments in Utheemu while also ensuring their historical integrity. Noting that foreign assistance has been received for these efforts, the President said a separate budget will be allocated for proper preservation.

"This will be a significant project. A dedicated budget will be allocated for it to ensure it is equipped with the necessary resources. These ancient sites will be preserved using proper restoration methods while maintaining their original integrity. This has not been adequately done before,” he said.

Addressing the people of Thakandhoo, the President noted that Thakandhoo is also an island of rich historical significance. The island’s ancient cemetery, which features intricate stone carvings, is a valuable building that tells important stories of history, he noted. He pledged to safeguard these sites despite the island’s small population, and promote cultural tourism to attract visitors interested in the Maldives’ history.

The President said that as part of the two-year project to celebrate the National Day in Utheemu, many programmes will be also conducted alongside in Thakandhoo and Baarah.

"It will benefit history students and historical researchers— it will be done in a way that it benefits the people. In addition, cultural tourism targeted towards tourists interested in the history of Maldives will be pursued on this island,” the President said.

The President said the government would allocate a designated budget for these efforts. He assured that the next two years will see tremendous efforts towards the protection of historical monuments and revival of nationalism.
