Maldives Hopes to Transform Strong China Ties for Greater Benefit

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday expressed hopes to transform its strong ties with China to bring greater benefit to both nations in the year ahead.

President Dr Muizzu in his message on the occasion of Spring Festival and Chinese New Year, extended his felicitations to the President of China, Xi Jinping, and the Premier of the State Council of China, Li Qiang.

In separate letters to the leaders, the President extended heartfelt greetings and best wishes from the Government and the people of the Maldives to the leadership and citizens of China on this joyous occasion. He reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to the One-China Principle and emphasised the importance of strengthening the partnership for the mutual benefit of both nations.

Additionally, he highlighted the significance of consolidating the China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership to ensure the continued flourishing of the close ties between the two countries.

In a message shared on his social media handles, President Muizzu said the Maldives cherishes its close and enduring friendship with China.

“Together, we have built a partnership based on mutual respect and shared aspirations. As we welcome the new year, I am confident that our strong ties will be transformed to bring greater benefits to both our nations” the President said.

The Maldives and China established diplomatic relations on 14th October 1972.

Hailed by the governments of both countries, as a global example of a small and large country working together for mutual benefit, China throughout the years has been a major development partner of the island nation.

The overwater Sina-Male’ bridge, linking the capital Male’ to the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’ and the airport island Hulhule’ remains a symbol of the infrastructure development cooperation between the two countries.
