Maldives and India Explore Cooperation in Agriculture

Maldives and India have held discussions on potential cooperation to develop the agricultural industry of the Maldives. The discussions were held during a meeting between the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Maryam Mariya, and Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives G Balasubramaniam.

The discussions, which took place at the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, focused on areas of cooperation. This included discussions on providing technical assistance to the Maldivian agricultural sector with the help of technical experts of India, and establishing resources to work with India’s agricultural product marketing organisations to promote locally produced Maldivian agricultural products. Food security was also a key topic of discussion.

The meeting also discussed the possibilities of cooperation between the two countries in the field of animal welfare. Increasing higher education opportunities in the field of agriculture in the Maldives was also discussed.

India is among the most advanced countries in the region in the field of agriculture. A large percentage of food imported to the Maldives comes from India.
