Democrats Elects Imthiyaz, Waheed to Lead Party

The Democrats has named former Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy as the party’s new President.

Several senior members of The Democrats had left to join the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), including party President Hassan Latheef and Deputy President Mohamed Shifaz. Prior to joining the Democrats, both Latheef and Shifaz had held senior positions in MDP.

Imthiyaz was named the new party leader while former Parliamentarian Mohamed Waheed will be his deputy. The duo will take up the top two positions of The Democrats without contest.

Despite losing several senior members, The Democrats had assured that efforts to strengthen and grow the party would continue. This includes efforts to increase party membership as well as organising events.

“This party has very clear principles. While it was founded on these principles, we also operate in line with them. We have worked to increase party membership. It is hard to say exactly how much we have grown. However, membership efforts will be ramped up with renewed focus across the Maldives,” Imthiyaz had told local media.
