President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday appointed two members to the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).
The President had nominated Mohamed Zahid and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed to the two vacant membership positions on the electoral watchdog in December last year.
The two posts were vacated after the Parliament passed to dismiss ECM Vice President Ali Nashath and Member Mohamed Asif following widespread allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
The nominations of Zahid and Salah were approved by the Parliament during an extraordinary sitting on 15 January.
Prior to issuing the letter of appointment, the oath of office was administered to Zahid and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed by the Supreme Court Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir at a ceremony held at the President's Office on Sunday.
The vacancies of the five member ECM have now been filled with the appointment of the two.
However, under the recent amendments to the Elections Commission Act, President Dr Muizzu still needs to appoint the President and Vice President of the ECM out of the five members.
Once the President picks the duo to lead ECM, the nominations will then proceed for Parliament approval.
