Siemens Selected Male’-Hulhumale’ Grid Connection Consultant

Environment Ministry on Monday assigns UK-based Siemens PLC to provide consultancy services for the proposed project to interconnect the electricity grids of Male’ and Hulhumale’.

The approximately US$369,000 project includes the formulation of detailed designs and tender documents, the Ministry said. The project agreement was signed by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and Finance Controller of Siemens PLC Mark Lunn.

Thoriq described the project as another step forward in implementing environment friendly energy production, as it would increase the efficiency of diesel power generation.

Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) Abdul Shukoor Salih said the project would ease space constraints faced by STELCO, and help control the company’s spending.

This work contracted to Siemens PLC is scheduled to be completed in October 2016, Thoriq added.

The consultancy for the interconnection of grid between Male’ and Hulhumale’ is fully funded by the Government of Maldives. Hulhumale’ is to be connected to Male’ electricity network via the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge which is expected to be completed by 2018.

The Ministry earlier said electricity prices will see positive changes once Hulhumale’ is connected to the Male’ power network.
