Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, who is serving a 25-year jail sentence on terrorism charges, has been transferred from police custody to Maafushi Prison. Police said Adeeb was transferred to the custody of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) on Tuesday. His prison transfer comes 16-days after his sentencing and follows concerns raised by his lawyers about his extended custody in Dhoonidhoo Prison Facility.
In response to these concerns, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz earlier said Adeeb would be placed under MCS custody once police conclude their investigations. Nawaz, however, did not disclose details of the cases.
Adeeb is serving two sentences; 15 years for his involvement in the assassination attempt against the President; and 10 years for firearms possession.
