Abbas calls on Israel to end its hegemony in the region

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Israel to end its “regional domination” during a press conference he held Wednesday in Brussels in advance of his scheduled address the next day before the European Parliament.

He made the statement at press conference held after meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels.

Speaking after their meeting, Mogherini called for settlement expansion, demolitions, violence and those inciting violence to stop in the region.

Abbas, who is scheduled to address the European Parliament today, said Israel should stop violating the rights of the Palestinian people, and it is also in Israel’s interest.

He said they will be able to implement the provisions of the peace initiative of 2002 if Israel agrees to do so.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin is also in Brussels and meeting with EU chiefs. He addressed the European Parliament on Wednesday.
