Shaviyani Atoll Council has introduced a project aimed at developing AutoPot greenhouse farms in Goidhoo, representing a pivotal step towards the modernisation of agricultural practices within the region. The greenhouse farms would leverage advanced, gravity-fed watering systems to cultivate plants both efficiently and sustainably.
With the project, the Shaviyani Atoll Council seeks to introduce modern agricultural advancements and boost involvement in the agriculture industry with their latest initiative. The project aims to establish two greenhouse farms, each covering 1,000 square feet. Valued at approximately USD 29,188, the project has been contracted to Prime Fertilizers Maldives Pvt. Ltd.
The maintenance and operations of the greenhouse farms will be managed by the Goidhoo Island Council. Should the pilot project prove successful, the Shaviyani Atoll Council has plans to extend the initiative to other islands within the atoll. The council anticipates that this expansion will foster the adoption of innovative farming techniques and create new employment opportunities throughout the region.
The administration‘s goals are centred on advancing the farming and agriculture industries, bolstering food security, and reducing the country's dependence on external sources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare stated regarding the greenhouse farm project in Goidhoo. The ministry also expressed its approval of the project's initiation, applauding the contributions of non-governmental organisations and local residents in championing such initiatives.
