Maldives Air Ambulance Reaches 700-Mission Milestone

The Maldives Emergency Medical Services' air ambulance has successfully completed missions since its inception, according to the Ministry of Health.

Launched on March 1, 2024, this crucial service was established under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's electoral pledge, with the aim of enhancing emergency medical care across the archipelago. Operated in collaboration with the national carrier, Maldivian, the air ambulance fleet consists of a DHC Dash 8-200 series aircraft and a DAWC-6 Twin Otter seaplane.

Reflecting on this significant achievement, the health ministry stated, "Since its launch on March 1, 2024, the Maldives Emergency Medical Services' air ambulance has completed 700 trips, attending to 804 patient cases."

The Dash 8 aircraft is designed to transport two patients simultaneously, highlighting its critical role in emergency healthcare. A dedicated team of 15 professionals, comprising doctors, nurses, and emergency medical technicians, has undergone specialised training to provide these services.

This initiative represents a collaborative effort involving the health ministry, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), and the government's universal healthcare insurance scheme, Aasandha. The administration of President Dr Muizzu plans to expand this service by acquiring helicopters, thus further broadening the reach and efficacy of air medical evacuations.

Before the launch of the air ambulance service, medical evacuations relied on helicopters donated by the Indian government and Maldivian's regular aircraft. The administration aims to secure a dedicated aircraft operated entirely by a local team, thereby enhancing the self-sufficiency of emergency medical services.
