MET Office Warns More Rain Amid Efforts to Curb Flooding

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned that large parts of the country will experience heavy rainfall amid a fresh bad weather spell.

Maldives has been experiencing bad weather since the weekend, though the skies cleared briefly on Sunday before the rains hit on Monday.

The MET Office said large parts of the country will experience thunderstorms throughout Tuesday.

The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded in Maavah, Laamu Atoll with 37.5 millimeters of rain. The second highest rainfall was recorded in Kadhdhdoo in the same Atoll with 28.6 millimeters of rainfall. Rainfall in the capital Male’ was recorded at 8.3 millimeters in the last 24 hours.

Male’ has been bracing for heavy rains with a special operation underway to combat possible flooding.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Maldives Police Service (MPS) along with the Male’ City Council have so far set up over 3,500 sandbags in dozens of homes and buildings to prevent flood damage.

The Met Office has issued warnings of rough seas and tidal surges accompanying the severe weather conditions. The Met Office has urged authorities and citizens to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of both individuals and property.

The MET office said large parts of the country are expected to experience heavy rains, strong winds and rough seas until Saturday.
