Former President Mohamed Nasheed has declared his intention to abstain from active participation in the political activities of any party at this time. President Nasheed served as the president from 11 November 2008 to 7 February 2012.
Initially a member of the now-opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), he led an MDP administration during his tenure. Following differences with the MDP, President Nasheed departed from the party and played a pivotal role in establishing a new political party, The Democrats, which was formed in June 2023.
In a post to social media, President Nasheed declared that he does not intend to actively participate in the political activities of any party at this time. This announcement follows the recent departure of several senior figures from The Democrats to the MDP.
President Nasheed expressed his continued support for the MDP, describing it as a party that is 'like a child' to him and underscoring his desire for the party to remain strong. He characterised The Democrats as a platform for youth participation in politics but clarified that he does not intend to take an active role in the party at present. President Nasheed affirmed that he does not intend to withdraw from the Maldives' political scene entirely.
President Nasheed currently serves as the Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), an international partnership of 68 countries highly vulnerable to climate change.
