NDMA, Utility Companies Gear Up for Severe Weather Across the Country

In anticipation of heavy rains and severe weather conditions over Malé, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has proactively initiated measures to mitigate potential flooding by distributing sandbags to residents and businesses.

The NDMA has initiated efforts to protect properties from anticipated floodwaters by distributing sandbags at the former housing ministry site until 10 p.m. on Monday, according to the authority said. This initiative is designed to help residents and businesses safeguard their properties. Malé, recognised for its susceptibility to severe flooding during incessant rains, is once again bracing for potential impacts.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecasted heavy showers and severe weather. In response, authorities are implementing proactive measures, including the installation of additional pumps to drain potential floodwaters. A special task force, comprising all relevant government agencies, has been formed to address the situation. The Met Office anticipates that severe weather conditions will persist across the country until the end of the week.

Both the State Electric Company Ltd. (STELCO) and Fenaka Corporation have expressed their readiness to assist during the severe weather conditions. STELCO has prioritised the safety and protection of its powerhouses and other critical infrastructure in Malé and the atolls, committing to ensuring uninterrupted utility services. Similarly, Fenaka Corporation has activated its emergency response teams on 151 islands, deploying a combined workforce of 2,311 personnel to provide assistance during emergencies.

Authorities in the outer atolls are also preparing to provide aid during the stormy weather. Teams from STELCO and Fenaka Corporation are on high alert, standing ready to assist in case of emergencies, particularly where property damage is concerned, according to the companies.

The Met Office has issued warnings of rough seas and tidal surges accompanying the severe weather conditions. The Met Office has urged authorities and citizens to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety and security of both individuals and property.
