The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has announced the commencement of applications for higher education scholarships to study in China. These scholarships, offered through the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme, allow recipients to pursue their studies at any university or educational institution in China.
The scholarships comprise one opportunity for a Bachelor's degree, one for a Master's degree, and one for a Doctoral degree. The coverage of these scholarships encompasses tuition fees, medical insurance, and a portion of accommodation costs. These opportunities are available across a diverse array of academic fields, according to the higher education ministry.
The recipients of these scholarships will be selected by the Chinese government. According to the ministry's announcement, applications are open until 15 February.
The higher education ministry also announced additional scholarship opportunities made available through the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives. These additional scholarships include two opportunities for Bachelor's degrees, two for Master's degrees, and two for PhDs. They will cover tuition fees, accommodation, medical insurance, and stipends. Applications for these scholarships are open until 1 p.m. on 30 January, according to the ministry's announcement.
This announcement follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to China in 2024, during which the Chinese government committed to providing 1,000 scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students. These scholarships will be distributed throughout President Muizzu's five-year term, with the administration aiming to send 200 students to China annually to pursue their higher education.
