2024: A Year of Cultural Renaissance Under President Dr Muizzu's Leadership

In a monumental move to safeguard and rejuvenate the cultural identity of the Maldives, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, since assuming office in November 2023, has inaugurated a series of initiatives aimed at preserving the nation’s language, traditions, customs, and religious unity.

One of the most significant decisions made by President Dr Muizzu was the establishment of the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage. This marks the first time in the nation's history that the Ministry of Art, Culture and Heritage has revised its mandate to prioritise national identity and culture.

This significant change is part of President Dr Muizzu's strategy to revive the national spirit and recalibrate diminishing social values. The ministry's mission is to revive the national spirit and recalibrate the diminishing social values through academic and intellectual research.

The ministry's mandate encompasses the protection and promotion of the national identity, language, culture, and heritage of the Maldives. It is through this dedication that numerous significant achievements have been realised under President Dr Muizzu's administration throughout 2024.

Establishment of the National Heritage College

In a historic move, President Muizzu established the National Heritage College during the National Day celebrations in September 2024. This institution is the first of its kind in the Maldives and is mandated with the task of conducting educational research on Maldivian heritage, customs, history, and nationhood. The college aims to ensure that the essence of Maldivian nationhood becomes an integral part of Maldivian life.

The college also endeavours to increase the number of youth studying national identity and attract more individuals to this field. It is tasked with researching and documenting achievements related to Maldivian nationality and publishing significant papers on these topics. The college's inaugural conference in 2024, held under the banner 'Kalhuohfummi-Dhivehi Gaumiyyathuge Dharubaaru,' explored various aspects of Maldivian history, culture, and heritage, featuring nine research papers on topics such as the origins of Islam in the Maldives and local dialects.

Formation of the Nationhood Council

In alignment with his commitment to nationalism, President Dr Muizzu constituted the Nationhood Council. This council focuses on five main areas: Dhivehi language, Maldivian history, heritage, digitalisation, and Maldivian crafts. The council is a pivotal part of President Dr Muizzu's pledge to revitalise nationalism in the Maldives.

Preservation of Historical Sites and Promotion of Heritage Tourism

The Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage is also dedicated to the protection and restoration of historical sites, including ancient monuments, mosques, and other significant landmarks. Despite challenges such as budget constraints and a shortage of technical expertise, the administration is determined to address these issues by developing a mechanism to generate income through cultural and heritage tourism. This initiative aims to provide an immersive and educational experience for tourists, promoting the cultural, historical, and heritage aspects of the Maldives.

The Kalhuohfummi Replica and Collaboration with UNESCO

A noteworthy project under this initiative is the restoration and relocation of the Kalhuohfummi replica. This vessel, historically significant for its role in liberating the Maldives from Portuguese rule in 1573, was reconstructed and made its maiden voyage on the 50th Independence Day of the Maldives. The ministry is currently constructing a dedicated area in Rasrani Bageecha to house the vessel, which will include a wheelchair-accessible platform and educational panels detailing its history.

To further the preservation efforts, the ministry is working in collaboration with UNESCO to train Maldivians in heritage protection and bring international experts to the Maldives. These efforts are essential for preserving traditional Maldivian customs, rituals, and practices, including traditional music, dance, and poetry.

National Center for Heritage Studies

As part of its comprehensive approach, the ministry has established the National Center for Heritage Studies. This centre aims to create and revive knowledge of the Maldivian language, history, culture, heritage, customs, and nationalism. The ministry is also working on establishing a restoration laboratory to focus on preserving heritage artefacts and significant places.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration has made remarkable strides in preserving and promoting Maldivian culture and heritage. These efforts are not only vital for maintaining the nation's unique identity but also for ensuring that future generations can appreciate and continue these traditions. The establishment of dedicated institutions and councils, combined with collaborative efforts with international organisations, underscores the administration's unwavering commitment to cultural renaissance in the Maldives.
