President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the administration's plan to ship bulk quantities of rock boulders in a move aimed at accelerating the progress of ongoing and delayed infrastructure projects. The president announced this during his address to the residential community of Rathafandhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as part of his three-day tour of several islands in the Huvadhu Atoll.
President Dr Muizzu's visit to Rathafandhoo underscores the administration's steadfast commitment to equitable development across all islands, irrespective of their size or population. During his speech, he underscored the importance of resolving the critical shortage of rock boulders, which has been a major factor in delaying many land reclamation and harbour development projects.
A major factor causing delays in numerous infrastructure projects is the shortage of rock boulders and the associated challenges in acquiring them, according to President Dr Muizzu. Rock boulders play a crucial role in coastal protection and harbour development projects, being used to construct breakwaters and revetments.
To address this issue, the administration has devised a plan to bring in bulk shipments of rock boulders, with state-owned companies and the Ministries of Finance and Planning, and Construction, Housing and Infrastructure actively working towards this goal, President Dr Muizzu said. "Funding has also been arranged," the president assured, highlighting the administration's proactive approach to overcoming these challenges.
The president also reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the developmental preferences of Rathafandhoo's residents, pledging to develop the harbour and enhance the healthcare centre. He acknowledged the community's aspirations and confirmed that Rathafandhoo's harbour would be developed as part of the administration's initiatives this year. He also underscored the importance of improving the island's healthcare services by addressing space constraints and enhancing infrastructure and resources at the healthcare centre.
President Dr Muizzu's broader tour of the Huvadhu Atoll includes visits to nine islands, such as Nadellaa, Vaadhoo, Fiyoari, and Hoadedhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Kanduhulhudhoo, Nilandhoo, Maamendhoo, and Dhevvadhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll. His tour highlights the administration's dedication to ensuring that all islands receive the necessary support and resources for their development.
