President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated new water supply and sewerage network services on Hoadedhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, marking a significant milestone in the island's infrastructure development.
The project to develop the water supply and sewerage network on Hoadedhoo began on 13 June 2022, funded through a line of credit from the Export-Import Bank of India. Executed by India-based Triveni Engineering and Industries Ltd., the project cost over USD 4.9 million.
The project encompassed the installation of five pump stations for the sewerage network, a sea outfall system, and the development of a water and sewerage network pipe system, all interconnected with residential and commercial properties. Two reverse osmosis (RO) plants with a daily capacity of 75 tonnes of water and two water storage tanks were also installed.
Hoadedhoo, an island with approximately 800 residents, has long endured significant challenges due to the absence of a proper sewerage network, especially during the rainy season. The newly inaugurated infrastructure is anticipated to mitigate these issues, thereby significantly enhancing the quality of life for the community.
President Muizzu's visit to Hoadedhoo is part of his ongoing three-day tour of nine islands in the Huvadhu Atoll, which includes the Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls. During his tour, he will also visit Nadellaa, Vaadhoo, Fiyoari, and Rathafandhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Kanduhulhudhoo, Nilandhoo, Maamendhoo, and Dhevvadhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
The president's tour aims to engage with the residential communities on these islands, inquiring about their well-being and developmental aspirations. He is accompanied by a high-level government delegation, including cabinet ministers and several members of parliament, as part of his broader initiative to connect with residential communities in the outer atolls and engage with local island councils.
During these meetings, President Dr Muizzu engages directly with members of the local councils and Women's Development Committees (WDCs) to gain a comprehensive understanding of their needs. These interactions provide a platform for the president to discuss his administration’s developmental plans for the outer islands.
