Local councils have commenced efforts to conduct assessments on households affected by last week’s heavy rains.
During the rain that affected most parts of Maldives, six islands reported being significant flooding to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) due to heavy rainfall and sea swells. While Male’ was also severely flooded, individuals from 35 households were temporarily relocated.
On the islands most severely affected, councils are visiting households to assess the damage.
In Narudhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, flood waters entered 12 households on the island, causing damage to property.
In Inguraidhoo, Raa Atoll, sea swells did not directly affect households or cause property damage. However, sea swells in the island’s eroding area have potential to damage property, according to the island’s Council. The council has shared their concerns with the relevant authorities and hope for a swift resolution.
Meedhoo in Dhaalu Atoll was also significantly affected by last week’s rain. While 40 houses reported flooding, the council is working to evaluate the damage and will share their findings with NDMA.
Meanwhile, 80 percent of households in Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll were affected by flooding. When applications opened for assessment opened, 27 households reported significant damage. The council said the total damage to households and businesses is estimated to be nearly USD 65,000. Some of the damage include damage to machineries in aluminum workshops.
