Doctors Warn Of Dehydration during Ramadan

Water is the most important fluid that replenishes thirst, especially during the fasting month of Ramadan. Unfortunately though, most people do not drink enough but have only small amounts at Iftar and then forget to drink water until the next day.

Sixty to seventy percent of our body is made of water and any reduction in our water intake can affect our body’s cells and nerves from functioning properly. Health experts said that this is the reason why it is absolutely essential to compensate the loss of water in our body, because dehydration can cause undesirable side effects such as constipation, headache, dizziness, tiredness and dry skin. They said water plays a significant role in weight loss and maintenance, because it helps to get rid of toxins and reduce the feeling of hunger.

Experts recommend to drink small quantities of water throughout the night. They advise against drinking iced-water to break the fast saying it does not replenish one’s thirst but can cause blood vessels to contract and cause indigestion. It is recommended to drink water at room temperature or slightly cold.
