The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has reversed its previous decision to integrate garbage collection fees into electricity bills in the atolls.
In an announcement, WAMCO stated that it has canceled its earlier decision to combine household waste collection service bills together with another utility service bill. The decision was made following a recommendation from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, according to the corporation.
WAMCO clarified that only customers registered with the corporation for waste collection services will now be billed separately/ Fee collection will be handled by WAMCO offices in the islands, and payments can also be made via the AvasPay application.
WAMCO fees have been integrated into STELCO electricity bills in Male’ area since April 2023. While this arrangement has allowed for timely payments for WAMCO services, the corporation said it has provided a financial relief to the corporation.
Although WAMCO was providing garbage collection services to 53,000 households in the Male’ area, only 20,000 households were paying for registered services in Male’ before the bill tying came into effect.
The corporation has said it continues to bear significant financial burdens to ensure essential basic services are provided to citizens at the most affordable rates.
