Maldives’ Bad Weather Spell to Continue, as MET Warns Sea Swells

The present bad weather spell is set to continue through Friday, with swell wave surges also expected in large parts of the country, Maldives Meteorology Service (MET Office) has cautioned.

According to the MET Office, the current weather conditions are linked to a cyclone that has formed southeast of Sri Lanka, and a low pressure trough associated with it.

Especially the central part of the country is expected to experience rough seas, heavy rains and strong winds.

MET Office said wind speeds will be between eight and 18 mph in the south while wind speed is expected to reach 15 to 25 mph in the north and east.

Forecasts indicate that the spell of bad weather will continue until Sunday, with swell wave surges also expected in some islands during high tide.

Kadhdhoo, Laamu Atoll suffered the worst of the heavy rains, with the island experiencing 87 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours.

Authorities have urged extreme caution during sea travel and advised to take precautionary measures against flooding and swell wave surges.
