The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim has announced that the Maldives saw the largest volume of goods imported in its history in 2024.
According to Wajeeh, 66,387 cargo containers were imported in 2024, along with 131,262 freight tonnes of general cargo. General cargo are lightweight goods which may or may not be shipped in containers.
When compared to 2023, which recorded 62,092 containers imports and 117,968 freight tonnes of general cargo, the 2024 figures shows a seven percent increase in amount of containers imported, and a 29 percent rise in the volume of general cargo in freight tonnes.
According to statistics, the previous closest record for container imports was in 2018, when 63,002 containers and 123,669 freight tonnes of cargo were imported.
