The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that new security measures embedded into the new domain certificates will prevent duplication, providing enhanced protection to domain holders.
The Government officially launched the new domain service on Thursday, with the first domain certificate issued during the ceremony.
Providing information on the service, Minister Ameen explained that the ministry was informed by the previous government to cease domain services due to multiple issues. However, the new administration determined that the service should not remain suspended and decided to resume it, the Minister said.
Noting that the Ministry prioritised the protection of domain owners, the Minister said domain regulations have been reformed, and updated policies and administrative procedures have been introduced to ensure this. The new registry and certificate replaces the previously issued yellow slips and features advanced security enhancements to prevent duplication, he explained.
“This will hopefully make it more challenging to break the system. The security features on the certificates and registries are top-notch,” the Minister said.
While the Ministry opened for domain replacement on 17 November, over 600 service applications have been received thus far. The Minister said, although the issuance of new domains has not yet been resumed, this will only begin after ensuring that existing domains are protected and issued in accordance with the law. Domains will be opened for public purchase through an open bidding system, he added.
The government aims to establish a modern domain system similar to those used globally, and provide the service in such a way that it is attractive to youth and domain users.
