Police have towed over a 100 vehicles from the more busier streets of the Male’, amid renewed efforts to clampdown on illegal parking in the heavily congested capital.
The police on Thursday had warned that vehicles parked illegally on major roads such as Boduthakurufaanu Magu, Ameenee Magu, Majeedhee Magu, Orchid Magu, Ameer Ahmed Magu, and Sosun Magu which cause disruption to both general transport and public transport will be towed.
Five days after the warning, MPS told PSM News that around 150 vehicles have been towed, majority of which are motorbikes.
Police said the owners of the towed vehicles will be given seven days to secure its release. The vehicles that remain after the seven day period would have registration voided through the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and the vehicles subsequently destroyed, police said.
Vehicles are typically parked illegally on both sides of busy Male’ City roads, causing obstruction to pedestrians and other road users. The police had urged the cooperation of the public in the efforts to ensure the safety and security of Male’ City roads, and expressed gratitude for the continued public support in such efforts.
