Former Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure, Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). The HDC holds the mandate to develop and manage housing, real estate, and infrastructure projects throughout the country.
Jameel, who previously played a pivotal role in the development of Hulhumalé during his tenure as Construction Minister, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new position. In addition to his governmental role, Jameel is also a renowned architect and an independent researcher focused on the architectural heritage of the Maldives.
This appointment comes in the wake of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed’s resignation from the post on 21 December. Rasheed's resignation was prompted by his suspension following a police inquiry into allegations of mismanagement related to the distribution of land plots under the 'Binveriya' housing schemes. On 19 December, the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) took action by suspending the entire board of directors of HDC, with the exception of the chairperson.
