Bodufolhudhoo Council Tops Efficiency Index for Fourth Year

Bodufolhudhoo Island Council in Alifu Alifu Atoll has been crowned as the most efficient island council for the fourth year in a row.

Bodufolhudhoo Island Council bagged the award for the fourth consecutive year during the Kangathi Awards ceremony held on Thursday evening.

The Local Government Authority (LGA) introduced the Kangathi Awards in 2015 to celebrate the councils that achieve the highest rank in the Local Council Performance Index every year.

The performance index is gauged by the evidence presented to LGA by the island and Atoll councils.

The councils were awarded "Gadhamahaanthi" and "Ranihamaanthi" categories by the Performance Index of the councils. The Gadhamahaanthi is an award given to Atoll Councils that achieve the highest rankings in the Local Council Performance Index. The Ranihamaanthi is an award given to the island councils that score the best rankings in the index.

Gadhamahaanthi Award Winners

  • 1st - Laamu Atoll Council
  • 2nd - Shaviyani Atoll Council
  • 3rd - Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council

Bodufolhudhoo Island Council president Shujau Adam told PSM News that the council along with the island’s Women’s Development Committee (WDC) and staff have made concerted efforts to implement the annual plan, serve the people closely and gain public trust and confidence.

He also said the aim of the council is to keep political differences aside and work together in all matters related to the development and progress of the island.

The Local Councils Performance Index was launched in 2015 to assess the quality of council performance and determine the ranking of councils. It is based on the core foundations of urban governance and the core principles of the Global Campaign on Urban Governance.

The Atoll Council and Island Council that had made the greatest strides to move up the index were also recognised during the ceremony.

The City Councils of Male’, Kulhudhuffushi, Addu and Fuvamulah were also awarded in recognition of their respective roles in strengthening the decentralisation system, improving the pillars of governance and providing rural services to the people.
