The Ministry of Islamic Affairs revealed Thursday that 818 imams have been trained this year under the National Imam Training Project.
The National Imam Training Project was aimed at providing additional training and designating Imams in 11 regions across the Maldives.
Training for the last batch of the National Imam Training Project for various Mosques in the capital Male has been completed.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs said that the Imams of all mosques in the country have now completed training as planned with this batch.
Under the project, a total of 818 Imams have been trained this year.
A total of nine subjects have been taught in the programme which included Qur'an recitation, Tajweed, Thafseer, Fiqh, Hadith and Aqeedah, the Ministry said.
In addition, the programme has provided special emphasis to provide the necessary training for Imams to execute their responsibilities in maintaining and upkeep of mosques.
The government has given special emphasis to training Imams, with an aim to train at least 100 imams annually and provide opportunities for them through government funded social housing schemes
In addition, the government has decided to appoint two imams for the Islamic centres in different parts of the country, one of whom will be dedicated to call for prayers while a graduate degree holder would be designated as the lead Imam.
