The management of tourism data in the Maldives can be enhanced with the introduction of the new Tourism Statistics Survey, Minister of State for Climate Change, Environment and Energy Dr Muaviyath Mohamed has stated.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) commenced efforts to compile the Maldives Tourism Survey in 2019, in collaboration with the Environment Ministry and the Maldives Utility Regulatory Authority. According to NBS, the survey will play a significant role in gathering essential data needed to develop the country’s development plan.
Officially inaugurated on Tuesday by State Minister Muaviyath, the Tourism Statistics Survey incorporates findings from the 2022 Census and environmental data linked to tourism and other sectors. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr Muaviyath stated that the extensive environmental data included in the survey would enable the formulation of policies. He further noted that the data necessary to develop the National Green House Gas Inventory is also included in the survey.
The State Minister emphasised that the survey’s data can be used to improve the management of tourism-related information, as well as streamline the generation of environment-related reports required for several international treaties.
“The statistics will provide the necessary environmental data needed for preparing reports such as the UN’s Climate Change Treaty, Paris Biennial Transparency Report (BTR), and the National Determined Contribution Report,” the State Minister said.
