President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Abdul Haseeb Ismail as a member of the Elections Commission. The appointment was made in accordance with Articles 167(a) and 168(b) of the Constitution and Section 4(a) of the Elections Commission Act, as stated by the President’s Office.

The letter of appointment was presented to Ismail by President Dr Muizzu during a ceremony held Monday morning at the President's Office. Prior to receiving the appointment letter, Ismail took the oath of office as a member of the Elections Commission. The oath was administered by Justice Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Justice of the Supreme Court.

Before his appointment as a member of the Elections Commission, Ismail served as the assistant director of the commission. Ismail joined the commission on 2 January 2022. His previous roles include positions in the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

President Dr Muizzu nominated Ismail for the position on 14 October, and the Parliament endorsed the appointment on 5 November. Ismail's appointment follows a vacancy in the commission membership due to the end of tenure for the previous chairman, Fuwad Thowfeek, whose term ended on 23 November.
