Omadhoo Harbour in Ruins; President Vows Top Priority for New Harbour

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday pledged his government’s top priority to resolve the issues facing the residents of Omadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll over its harbour which is in ruins due to years of neglect.

President Muizzu made the pledge during his meeting with residents of Omadhoo as part of his ongoing two day tour of some islands of Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

The current harbour in Omadhoo was developed by the residents 25 years ago. Since then, virtually no repairs or maintenance had left the harbour in ruins making it a huge challenge for the boats to dock.

The President had visited and inspected the state of the harbour upon his arrival on this island.

Addressing the people of Omadhoo, the President assured them that he would listen to the people's wishes for the development of the island, noting that priority must be given to resolve the harbour issue.

Despite severe budgetary constraints this year, the President pledged to develop the Omadhoo harbour through the budget next year.

In addition to the harbour project, President Muizzu also said precedence would be given next year to solving the severe erosion faced by the island.

“New projects have been prioritised with special emphasis on health and education. The health center in this island is also in very poor condition. You can see the school's situation. So we will develop the multipurpose hall and classroom for the school next year. We will also add space and develop the health centre,” he pledged.

The President said he would also develop sports facilities in Omadhoo next year, including a women's handball court.. He also said that the waste management center in Omadhoo will be provided with facilities as part of the ongoing efforts to bring an environmentally friendly solution to waste management in the country.

President reiterated that next year the people will witness the commencement of projects pledged to the people.
