The Maldives Statistics Bureau has commenced fieldwork for its Labour Force Survey (LFS), covering the Greater Malé region, which includes Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villimalé. The fieldwork is scheduled to take place from 15 to 21 December.
As part of the survey, enumerators from the Statistics Bureau will visit randomly selected households across these areas, according to the agency. The primary objectives of the LFS are to identify the labour force, gather comprehensive labour statistics, determine employment and unemployment rates, estimate migration rates for population projections, collect data for the Decent Jobs Indicator, and assess the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During the survey, the Statistics Bureau will also collect information on various aspects, including demographic details, education, household production, employment and unemployment details, migration, and volunteer work.
The Statistics Bureau has assured that under the Maldives Statistics Act (Law No. 16/2021), any disclosure of individual or household information for legal or any other purposes is strictly prohibited. The information obtained from the survey will be anonymised and will not reveal the identity of any individual or household, it assured.
The agency also called upon residents of Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villimalé to support the fieldwork by cooperating with the enumerators during the survey period.
