Authorities have initiated the cleanup efforts at the site of Thursday’s devastating fire, which severely damaged a government building and disrupted services provided by three ministries.
The fire, which erupted early Thursday morning, inflicted extensive damage on the structure housing the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, and the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure. Additionally, the adjacent 'Green Building,' home to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, sustained damage in the incident.
In the aftermath, services and operations of the affected ministries were suspended. Efforts are now focused on relocating their functions to the Dharubaaruge convention centre to ensure the continuity of essential services.
The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works is overseeing the cleanup operation. On Saturday, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar visited the site to assess the progress.
Minister Umar shared on social media that the removal of the damaged parts and debris of the building is currently underway. Parts of Ameenee Magu, which had been closed due to the fire and cleanup activities, are expected to reopen on Sunday, he added.
Efforts are ongoing to resume operations and services of the three impacted ministries, now being relocated to the Dharubaaruge convention centre. Despite significant property loss, including a substantial amount of equipment and documentation, no injuries were reported.
