President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's recent visit to India marked a significant milestone in the historical ties between the two nations, according to Indian High Commissioner in the Maldives, Munu Mahawar.
In an interview with PSM News, High Commissioner Mahawar described President Dr Muizzu’s visit to India in October as a "fruitful and successful visit." The visit facilitated extensive discussions aimed at bolstering and strengthening the bilateral relations between India and the Maldives, he noted.
High Commissioner Mahawar added that the visit paved the way for drawing up a roadmap to enhance the ties between the two countries. He also highlighted the accomplishments during his tenure as the High Commissioner, noting that the Indian government was able to facilitate numerous developmental initiatives with Indian assistance.
Mr Mahawar, who was appointed as the Indian High Commissioner in the Maldives in 2021, will conclude his tenure later this year. Reflecting on his time in the Maldives, he underscored the various small- and large-scale projects carried out with Indian government assistance, including financial aid and human capacity development efforts.
He also noted the significant assistance provided by the Indian government in the military and defence sector. "For example, the construction of MNDF [Maldives National Defence Force] Senahiya Hospital and the development of the training centre in Maalifushi are notable. These are some of the military sector assistance provided by India," he stated.
The High Commissioner also spoke about efforts to ensure the safety and security of the Indian Ocean region. The aim of the Indian government was to work closely with neighbouring countries to ensure the safety and security of the region, he stressed. "Working with the Maldives on this front is what the Indian government wants," he added.
Looking ahead, Mr Mahawar expressed his hopes for the future, including the opportunity for the Indian government to continue being an important development partner for the Maldives and provide more assistance in the future. In conclusion, he expressed hope that the India-Maldives relations will be strengthened to newer heights in the future.
