Minister of Social and Family Development Dr. Aishath Shiham has announced that 54 children in state custody have been successfully reunited with their families as part of the government's “Every Child Has a Family” programme. This initiative aims to ensure that every child grows up in a loving and supportive family environment.
Minister Shiham highlighted that, although children are placed in state custody due to various challenges, the goal is always to provide better opportunities and reunite them with their families. In the past year, approximately 50 children have been placed with families.
As part of the program, the government provides a financial allowance of MVR 5,000 to families without family support to cover the expenses of foster children. The Ministry also offers assistance to ensure a safe and supportive environment for the child, including mental health support and guidance for families on proper child care.
To strengthen child welfare efforts, the government has established the State Care Services department to oversee the care of children in state custody
