President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described the International Zero Carbon Island initiative as a critical step forward in the global effort to combat climate change. He made these remarks during the launch event organized by Shandong Province, China, on the side-lines of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
President Dr. Muizzu praised the commitment of President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government to green and low-carbon development, as well as their continued support for the Maldives' environmental initiatives. He specifically highlighted China's ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, calling it an inspiring example of leadership and applauding China’s role in advancing global climate action.
The President emphasized that low-carbon development is increasingly essential in the face of escalating climate impacts. He stressed the urgency of reducing emissions and protecting the environment, noting that the Maldives and other vulnerable nations are committed to taking an active role in shaping a sustainable future, rather than merely being victims of climate change.
Acknowledging the importance of multilateral cooperation, President Dr. Muizzu noted that the Maldives’ participation in global forums serves as a reminder of the country's dedication to fostering a sustainable and resilient future. He reaffirmed that the Maldives aims to take charge of its own future by embracing leadership in climate action.
He expressed confidence that the progressive, low-carbon policies being implemented will provide valuable lessons and serve as a model for the Maldives and other island nations seeking sustainability and resilience in the face of climate challenges. The President also stressed that climate action requires collective global effort, urging COP29 participants to come together and agree on a concrete climate finance goal.
After the event, President Dr. Muizzu held a brief meeting with the Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China, Ding Xuexiang, where they discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
