Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has emphasised the role of Maldivian culture in promoting diplomacy. He made these remarks at an event for diplomats held at the Maldives National University (MNU).
The event, organised by students of the MNU’s Master of Political Science and International Affairs programme, aimed to introduce Maldivian culture to diplomats working in the Maldives. The seminar included presentations on Maldivian history, cultural traditions, and culinary practices.
Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel highlighted the richness of Maldivian culture, noting that it encourages connections with other cultures and fosters understanding. He emphasised that promoting Maldivian culture should go beyond simply showcasing customs and traditions; it should actively bridge cultural differences. The minister also underscored that Maldivian culture plays an essential role in the country’s diplomatic efforts.
Minister Khaleel remarked that cultural diplomacy offers valuable opportunities to share customs and traditions, drawing from his own experience of how sharing a nation’s stories and values can build connections. He further noted that the government prioritises the preservation of Maldivian culture for future generations, as reflected in its policies and the establishment of a dedicated ministry for cultural preservation.
The Foreign Minister expressed that cultural engagement shapes foreign perceptions of the Maldives, creating opportunities in business, tourism, and education.
