President launches National Teacher Training Programme

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the National Teacher Training Programme at a ceremony held at the Maldives National University (MNU) Auditorium. The event was attended by Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, along with cabinet ministers and state officials.

At the ceremony, the President awarded scholarships to 135 students participating in this year’s programme.

This initiative fulfils a presidential pledge to ensure that Maldivian schools are staffed with local teachers. The programme is designed to allow students interested in teaching to begin their degree in education after completing a foundational course in teaching, starting from Grade 11.

Students enrolled in the programme will receive a monthly stipend of USD 97. Training will focus on subject areas where there is a shortage of teachers, with special priority given to these disciplines.

The programme is part of the Revolutionary Change in Education named "Thaiba" project, funded by the Global Partnership for Education.
