Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has revealed that efforts are underway to establish fish aggregating devices production centres in both the northern and southern regions of the Maldives. During a press conference on the ministry's work, the minister emphasized the need for these centres to meet the growing demand in the fishing and tourism industries.
Minister Shiyam explained that two types of sails are being produced in the Maldives: one for general fishing and another for sports fishing. However, he pointed out a significant challenge—bad weather often damages these devices, highlighting the need for more robust local production capabilities.
At present, there is only one such production centre in the Maldives, which has proven to be a limitation. To address this, the ministry is moving forward with plans to construct two new production centres. Land for the centres has already been allocated, with clearing underway at one of the sites.
Since the government took office, a total of 29 fish aggregating devices have been built, including 18 for general use. This reflects the government's commitment to modernizing and expanding the nation's fishing industry.
