Former President Yameen files petition for review of charges

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has filed a petition with the Prosecutor General’s Office, requesting a review of the charges brought against him.

PSM News has learned that the Prosecutor General's Office is currently considering this request, which includes a review of the remand status of individuals arrested or detained in connection with the case. However, a decision on the petition has not yet been rendered.

On December 25, 2022, the Criminal Court sentenced Yameen to 11 years in prison and imposed a fine of USD 3 million for money laundering and accepting bribes. He appealed this decision in March of the previous year. Although the hearings for the appeal concluded several months ago, the High Court's judgment identified significant issues in the Criminal Court's ruling, including allegations of an unfair trial and violations of constitutional rights. The High Court recommended that the conviction be overturned and that the case be retried.

Furthermore, the Criminal Court is currently hearing additional charges against President Yameen related to accepting a bribe of USD 1 million and laundering those funds.
