National Sports Development Fund launched to elevate athletic performance

Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has announced the creation of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) as part of the Maldives' long-term strategy to develop exceptional athletes.

Speaking at the Maldives Sports Awards 2024, the Minister highlighted that the government's initial step was to create a comprehensive long-term plan for the future of sports in the Maldives. This plan outlines the necessary actions to secure medals beyond the SAARC region, with implementation already underway.

Minister Rafiu noted that the Maldives has successfully passed the first stage toward achieving podium finishes at the Asian Games and the Olympics. He noted the qualification of Maldivian table tennis star Fathmath Dheema Ali for the Paris Olympics in July, marking a significant achievement when she secured first place in the SAARC qualifiers.

Additionally, the Minister mentioned that the recent Asian Sailing Championships in the Maldives have made sailing the first Maldivian sport to qualify for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, further showcasing the nation’s commitment to enhancing its athletic capabilities.
