President initiates masterplan to reduce tobacco use in Maldives

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans for a comprehensive masterplan aimed at decreasing tobacco consumption in the Maldives. This initiative follows discussions during a recent Cabinet meeting focused on promoting a smoke-free society.

The plan will build upon existing tobacco control laws and regulations, aiming for a lasting solution over the next four years. Key initiatives will include empowering social workers, offering incentives for non-smoking islands, and providing financial support for community activities. The first draft of the masterplan is set to be presented at this month’s Cabinet meeting. The President has also instructed relevant authorities to ensure free smoking cessation programs are available at all health centres.

This month, the President has taken significant actions against tobacco use, including a ban on the import and use of vaping devices starting December 15, as well as an increase in import duties on cigarettes. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to fostering a healthier, tobacco-free society in the Maldives.
