Gov't to launch environmentally friendly bicycles in the Maldives

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has announced plans to introduce environmentally friendly bicycles in the Maldives, in partnership with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). As part of the government's Low Emission Transport Project, this initiative aims to promote sustainable transportation options. The first phase will see the deployment of these bicycles in Hulhumale’.

Minister Thoriq Ibrahim shared that a bike-sharing scheme will be introduced, with 100 environmentally friendly bicycles being provided to HDC. To support this initiative, solar charging stations will also be established. He noted that research has been completed and funding is in place for the project.

Various agencies are collaborating to encourage eco-friendly habits among the public, in line with government policy. Additionally, the President has announced that environmentally friendly vehicles will be utilized in the Rasmale mega project. Bicycle awareness activities are already being conducted on several islands to promote this initiative.
