Maldives to launch prenatal and DNA testing for thalassemia

Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim announces that the government is preparing to introduce DNA testing for specific thalassemia diagnoses in government hospitals, alongside the launch of prenatal testing for the condition. He made the remarks during the unveiling of the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Management Master Plan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nazim emphasized the government's commitment to addressing thalassemia-related challenges in the Maldives. He revealed that discussions have been held with representatives from Italy and Cyprus to gain insights into effective thalassemia management, and efforts are underway to finalize a memorandum of understanding.

Furthermore, the minister highlighted the active engagement of the newly established Thalassemia Fund Committee and the National Blood Council in providing essential services. He noted that signing the memorandum for the creation of a Thalassemia Hospital represents a significant milestone in strengthening the nation’s healthcare system.

Minister Nazim also noted the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Management Master Plan, along with the new hospital, marks a vital advancement in enhancing the country's health infrastructure.
