Maldives and Japan discuss water security and eco-friendly energy solutions

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has met with Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori to discuss the implementation of a solar PV and NAS battery storage water desalination plant, a project supported by the Government of Japan.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Thoriq emphasised that both countries are committed to accelerating the progress of the project. He highlighted the project’s potential to enhance the water security of the Maldives and promote environmentally sustainable energy solutions. He also expressed gratitude to Japan for its support and noted that this initiative would further strengthen the ties between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Takeuchi reaffirmed Japan's dedication to environmental protection and sustainable development. He also underscored the importance of continued cooperation on similar projects in the future.

The Chinese company Sino Soar Hybrid Technology Company Limited was awarded a contract earlier this year to install energy management systems in solar PV systems across 20 islands, with a project cost of USD 1.2 million. The environment ministry announced that the work is scheduled to be completed within four months of commencement.

The government aims to generate 33% of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources over the next five years. Currently, 67.5 MW of solar power is installed, supplying about 6% of the nation’s electricity needs.
