As the Maldives and India prepare to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations next year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a commemorative visit. This milestone marks decades of cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
During his current visit to India, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of people-to-people connections as the cornerstone of their relationship. He expressed his intention to strengthen bilateral ties and celebrate the enduring bond between the Maldives and India, aiming to foster mutual growth and understanding in the years ahead. He highlighted India’s crucial role as a partner in the Maldives' social and economic development.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India were established on November 1, 1965. While the two countries have shared ties for many years, the past 59 years have witnessed numerous official visits between their leaders. Such exchanges are vital for reinforcing bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation across various sectors, as the Maldives and India continue to strengthen their partnership as neighbouring countries.
This visit marks President Muizzu's first official trip to India since taking office last November. His visit to the neighbouring country is at the invitation of the Indian President Droupadi Murmu.
