Temporary drainage installed in two areas of Male' to address street floods

The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure has revealed that temporary drainage systems to address street flooding have been installed in two locations in the capital, Male' City.

The government said that work on the drainage systems began on May 9 this year. It is intended to mitigate flooding until the city's road construction, funded by a grant from the Chinese government, is completed.

As such, the construction ministry said that temporary drainage systems have been set up near West Park and the Villingili Ferry Terminal. The installation is currently underway in the area surrounding Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), with plans to extend the work to the Artificial Beach area once completed. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is also assisting with the temporary systems in collaboration with the ministry, while the Road Development Corporation (RDC) is responsible for the actual practical work. The efforts are focused on the most flood-prone areas of the city.

A permanent solution to the flooding issues in Male' will be provided through the Chinese government's grant. The city's roads were constructed many years ago and are prone to flooding during the rainy season, causing water damage to some households.
